Sarasota Bay Estuary Program was at the forefront of recognizing the economic value of linking and promoting Sarasota Bay's cultural, historical, and environmental heritage. The Gulf Coast Heritage Trail was the culmination of this recognition and was the first regional eco-heritage based tourism trail program within the state of Florida.

CarFit Event March 01-2009 to Aid Older Drivers...

Join us Sunday, March 1, 2009 - Call 941-778-4619  FREE EVENT!

What is CarFit for the older driver?

CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them.

The CarFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community.

Why is CarFit important?

Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.

Driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills, however, older drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one's car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety but also the safety of others.

How is a CarFit check completed?

At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

SWPC Year-End 2008...

With another fruitful year behind us, the Scenic Waves Partnership Committee will begin planning for 2009.

An update of the Corridor Management Plan (SR 789) will consume a large part of our time; it is due April, 2009.  The update is being facilitated by IBI Group, Inc., and paid for via a National Scenic Byways grant, administered by the Florida Dept. of Transportation.

Also on our plates is planning for our Fifth Annual Eco Expo and Native Plant Sale which will be held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at City Hall.

Please see the 2008 Annual Report: http://cityofbradentonbeach.com/admin/documents_view.php?doc=1121

SCENIC WAVES "Better Together"...

After nearly six months of study and meetings, two Bradenton Beach advisory committees successfully merged into one group: the Scenic WAVES Partnership Committee.

Blending the Scenic Highway Committee (the Corridor Management Entity) with the Waterfronts Florida Partnership Committee (WAVES) was a smooth transition that has both groups working more efficiently - together.

Since everything that we do along the corridor, or anytime we enhance its intrinsic values, we are also in the "waterfronts" area, it made sense to combine our efforts and resources.

The new Mission Statement:

The Scenic WAVES Partnership Committee is dedicated to the health and vitality of the citizenry and industry of Bradenton Beach.  As an advisory committee we will: facilitate visioning and aid in enabling such visions to fruition, be forward-thinking and forward-acting toward the livability of our community, take an active role in communication so that all may be aware of opportunities, make the preservation and enhancement of our natural resources a priority in decision making, advocate public and private partnerships, and always remember our history and its role in our future.  Further: The Scenic WAVES Partnership Committee will endeavor to turn State Highway 789 into an attractive, user friendly gateway to the historic, recreational, commercial and residential opportunities available along its path.
